SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – OpenAI is expanding access to ChatGPT by offering Free and Go members unlimited text interactions with GPT-5.6 Luna. The company announced this update will start next week and will be subject to safeguards against misuse. During the current rollout, GPT-5.6 Luna will also become the default model for these accounts. Additionally, free users will see a Think button that enables the system to dedicate more time to complex questions before responding.

This new access applies exclusively to text conversations and does not remove all usage restrictions across ChatGPT. OpenAI clarified that limits will still be in place for file uploads, image generation, and other tools requiring extra processing. The Think feature will be introduced alongside unlimited text messaging next week, allowing GPT-5.6 Luna additional reasoning capacity for tasks that demand more analysis. The company continues to enforce separate controls on features beyond standard chats, including tools with different usage allowances.

OpenAI unveiled GPT-5.6 as a collection of models, including Luna, Sol, and Terra, with Luna serving as the faster and more economical choice within the lineup. The company stated ChatGPT now reaches approximately one billion users weekly for searches, research, planning, writing, and various other tasks. With this latest update, Luna will become the primary ChatGPT model for users on Free and Go plans. This expansion broadens access to the core chat service while maintaining tool-specific limits.

Paid subscriptions see a reasoning model upgrade

Subscribers to ChatGPT Plus and Pro will also gain access to an improved version of GPT-5.6 Sol for daily use. Sol is designed to support both quick replies and in-depth reasoning within the paid service. OpenAI indicated that the update results in more precise answers and minimizes unnecessary details when a simpler response suffices. Paid users will also find a reasoning slider available across web, mobile, and desktop platforms, allowing them to adjust how much processing ChatGPT applies to research, planning, coding, writing, and other tasks.

The company also reported a significant decrease in factual inaccuracies in internal tests of its latest models. These evaluations included financial, medical, and legal prompts that required detailed factual responses. OpenAI stated that answers with at least one factual error dropped by roughly 62% with GPT-5.6 Luna compared to GPT-5.5 Instant, and about 68% for GPT-5.6 Sol. The company added that Sol has improved its handling of dates, numbers, sources, rules, and assumptions when accuracy is critical.

Unlimited messaging remains within safety boundaries

OpenAI explained that its latest ChatGPT versions incorporate extra protections for users under 18. These measures aim to prevent romantic roleplay, age-restricted challenges, and claims that could substitute for real-world relationships. They also include limits related to sexual content, eating disorders, dangerous activities, restricted goods, and graphic violence. The company noted that new evaluations have been added for responses involving younger users. The expanded access to unlimited text conversations will continue to operate within the same safeguards against abuse for Free and Go accounts.

This update focuses on the main ChatGPT experience and does not affect other OpenAI products that utilize GPT-5.6 models, such as ChatGPT Work and Codex, which remain unchanged in this release. Paid users can now access the updated Sol model and reasoning controls, while Free and Go users will see Luna as their default model this week. Unlimited text chats and the Think button will be available next week, with separate limits still in place for images, uploads, and other tools.
