Ebola Death Toll Surpasses 1,900 in DRC

KINSHASA, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO / RankWire.AI / – The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has resulted in 1,916 fatalities, according to official reports as of Aug. 7. The authorities have documented 4,209 infections during this period, with the latest count exceeding the previous figure of 1,887 by 29 deaths. Additionally, 595 patients are currently in isolation receiving treatment, and 828 individuals have recovered.

DR Congo Ebola outbreak passes 1,900 deaths
Health teams track Ebola infections across affected communities in eastern DR Congo.

Ituri remains the province most severely affected, recording 3,636 confirmed cases and 1,551 deaths. North Kivu reports 470 cases and 315 deaths, while Haut Uele has 91 infections and 44 fatalities. Tshopo has documented nine cases and five deaths, and South Kivu reports three cases with one death. In total, the outbreak has impacted 53 out of 140 health zones across the five provinces reporting confirmed infections.

The latest daily update added 89 confirmed cases and 21 deaths to the national totals, with Ituri accounting for 73 of the new infections. North Kivu recorded an additional 12 cases, and Haut Uele saw four. Health teams are following 83.4% of identified contacts across affected regions. Authorities continue to reconcile surveillance, laboratory, and clinical records as they update the case and death figures.

Ituri remains the epicenter of the expanding outbreak

The Democratic Republic of the Congo confirmed the outbreak in May after laboratory tests identified Bundibugyo virus. The country’s Ministry of Health has led efforts in surveillance, testing, isolation, contact tracing, and clinical care across affected zones. Teams also implement infection prevention measures and safe burial protocols to curb further transmission. The outbreak has spread to several eastern provinces, where insecurity, population movement, and strained health systems hinder routine disease-control activities.

Ebola presents with symptoms such as fever, severe weakness, body pain, vomiting, and other serious health issues. As the illness progresses, some patients develop bleeding. This outbreak marks the 17th recorded Ebola event in the country since scientists first identified the virus in 1976. The World Health Organization has supported response efforts including case detection, laboratory testing, patient care, and infection control as health teams monitor transmission across multiple provinces.

Bundibugyo virus has no licensed vaccine

Bundibugyo virus differs from the Zaire Ebola species targeted by existing licensed vaccines, and there is currently no licensed vaccine or specifically approved treatment for Bundibugyo virus disease. Supportive care, such as hydration, symptom management, and close patient monitoring, remains the mainstay of medical treatment. Ongoing research continues to evaluate candidate vaccines and investigational therapies. By late July, Uganda had recorded 20 confirmed Bundibugyo cases with two deaths, and no new cases had been reported there after June 21.

The outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is the largest documented epidemic caused by Bundibugyo virus, ranking as the second-largest Ebola outbreak on record by confirmed case number. Most infections and fatalities are concentrated in Ituri and North Kivu. Authorities persist in laboratory testing, contact monitoring, patient isolation, and care, updating national totals as new surveillance data becomes available.
