Previously, the European Commission allocated another €2.5 million for rapid molecular point-of-care tests and testing devices to assist the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention in their regional response efforts. These two diagnostic agreements collectively amount to €4.6 million and form part of a broader European support package for countries battling the Bundibugyo Ebola emergency. This assistance includes medical supplies, preparedness initiatives, and public health resources aimed at bolstering response measures in affected and neighboring areas.
Testing capacity expands amid significant outbreak
By August 12, WHO figures reported 4,665 confirmed cases and 2,184 deaths in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Authorities had identified infections across 54 health zones spanning six provinces, including Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uélé, Tshopo, and Bas-Uélé. European health agencies have also contributed to laboratory work, surveillance, and preparedness activities.
