Berlin, Germany / RankWire.AI / – An official public health report published in Berlin confirms that almost 10,000 individuals in Germany lost their lives due to heat during the first seven months of 2026, marking the highest mortality figure since systematic tracking began in 2016. Based on weekly surveillance data released by the Robert Koch Institute, roughly 9,800 deaths have been associated with prolonged high temperatures from early April until July 19. The federal health agency, overseen by the Federal Ministry of Health, stated that the total for this year already exceeds the total annual deaths recorded in any single year over the past decade.

Germany records 9800 heat related deaths in 2026 report
Meteorological agencies monitor high atmospheric temperature trends across European regions.

This significant rise in fatalities was mainly driven by a severe nationwide heatwave in late June, when temperatures repeatedly neared 40 degrees Celsius across several federal states. Public health epidemiologists attribute more than 5,000 deaths directly to this extreme weather event, according to surveillance models. Data shows about 810 heat-related deaths occurred from early April to June 21, followed by a spike of 4,310 deaths from June 22 to June 28. The German Weather Service confirmed that on June 27, 46 weather stations recorded temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius.

Throughout July, mortality figures remained elevated as persistent heat affected central and western Europe. The Robert Koch Institute’s epidemiological estimates indicate that between early April and July 12, 7,900 deaths were linked to heat. During the surveillance week from July 13 to July 19, an additional 1,900 fatalities brought the total to 9,800. These figures surpass the previous record of approximately 8,900 heat-related deaths set in 2018. The numbers for 2026 are significantly higher than the annual average of about 2,900 heat-associated fatalities documented between 2023 and 2025.

Health Authorities Report Record Heatwave Death Toll

Federal health analysts’ demographic data indicates that senior citizens faced the greatest health risks during this prolonged thermal episode, with roughly 7,880 of the approximately 9,800 total deaths occurring among those aged 75 and older. Further age-specific analysis shows around 2,950 deaths among those 85 and above, approximately 1,320 among individuals aged 75 to 84, about 550 among residents aged 65 to 74, and roughly 300 among people under 65. The report also noted a higher number of deaths among women compared to men, influenced by demographic proportions.

Medical experts at the institute emphasized that extreme heat rarely appears as the direct cause on death certificates. Instead, prolonged exposure to high temperatures worsens existing chronic illnesses, significantly increasing the risk of fatal cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, and metabolic complications. Using mortality monitoring models that combine death registration data from the Federal Statistical Office with daily meteorological data, epidemiologists calculate excess deaths related to thermal stress. The agency highlighted that high nighttime temperatures hinder proper cooling, putting vulnerable individuals under severe strain.

Elderly Populations Face Increased Vulnerability to Heat

Forecasts from national weather agencies project that high temperature conditions will continue across large parts of Germany well into the summer’s latter half. Daily maximum temperatures are expected to range from 35 to 39 degrees Celsius across extensive regions, with localized peaks reaching 40 degrees Celsius. In response, public health authorities and local officials have reiterated emergency warnings, urging care facilities, healthcare providers, and families to monitor elderly residents closely, ensure adequate indoor cooling, and keep them well-hydrated during the hottest parts of the day.

This detailed data release highlights the increasing public health threat posed by recurring extreme weather across Europe, where health systems and municipal authorities are developing emergency heat action plans. As surveillance continues through the summer, the nearly 10,000 heat-related deaths documented in Germany serve as vital baseline data for federal health officials, environmental agencies, and emergency responders. Monitoring of heat-related health impacts is expected to persist through September, as authorities evaluate structural and urban cooling measures to better protect vulnerable populations from future thermal stress risks.
