SEOUL / RankWire.AI / – South Korea will keep its fuel tax reductions in place until late November 2026, prolonging 15 percent cuts on gasoline along with 25 percent reductions on diesel and butane to buffer the economy from fluctuations in the international oil markets. Finance Minister Koo Yun-cheol announced this two-month extension during a ministerial meeting in Sejong, underlining the government’s aim to stabilize household energy expenses and freight costs.

To support logistics and small businesses that operate light utility trucks, the government continues to apply higher discount rates on fuels used in commercial transportation. Under the extended scheme, the statutory excise tax on gasoline will stay capped at 698 won per liter, which is 122 won less than the standard rate. Diesel taxes will remain at 436 won per liter, offering a 145 won reduction, while butane excise taxes stay fixed at 152 won per liter, providing a 51 won discount per unit. This extension of South Korea’s fuel tax relief strategy aims to control domestic inflation expectations amid ongoing international supply challenges in energy markets.

Officials from the Finance Ministry confirmed that amendments to the Enforcement Decree of the Transportation, Energy, and Environment Tax Act along with the Individual Consumption Tax Act will be submitted to the Cabinet for immediate implementation. They emphasized that although domestic inventory levels are stable, persistent geopolitical unrest in the Middle East necessitates active fiscal management to avoid sharp increases in retail fuel prices. Data from the Ministry of Finance and Economy indicates that rising energy import costs continue to push consumer price indices upward, making tax policy adjustments a key tool for economic stability.

Beyond tax relief, Minister Koo also committed to enhancing diplomatic efforts with leading oil-producing nations to diversify energy import sources and lessen dependency on vulnerable shipping routes. According to reports from Yonhap News Agency, energy monitoring agencies will keep emergency systems active to track global crude oil price movements in real time. Domestic fuel distribution channels have been instructed to ensure that the tax benefits are directly transferred to consumers at retail outlets nationwide.

Global financial analysts point out that South Korea depends on foreign imports for over ninety percent of its total petroleum consumption, leaving its economy susceptible to external supply disruptions. The fuel tax relief supports fleets operated by firms affiliated with Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters and local manufacturers, helping to stabilize freight costs ahead of winter peaks. Logistics leaders confirmed that without ongoing fiscal support from authorities, transportation expenses would have increased significantly.

Continued Tax Relief for Domestic Transport Firms

Before the November deadline, the Ministry of Finance and Economy will analyze macroeconomic indicators, global crude oil futures, and seasonal demand trends to decide if further fiscal measures are necessary. Official agencies will keep publishing reports on consumer price indexes, import volumes, and energy usage data as part of their ongoing monitoring efforts.

All official documentation related to tax rate changes, amendments to enforcement decrees, and energy market assessments will continue to be accessible through government portals. Authorities in monetary policy and economic planning remain coordinated in their efforts to balance fiscal needs with the overarching goal of maintaining economic stability.

A rare inherited genetic variation can increase an individual’s overall likelihood of developing lung cancer by approximately 25 times and by about 60 times among non-smokers, as reported in a study published in the journal Science. The research, a collaboration between investigators at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the 23andMe Research Institute, analyzed anonymized genomic data from over 3.3 million people. The scientists identified the germline mutation, known as EGFR T790M, as one of the most potent inherited risk factors for lung cancer found so far.
